Warehouse automation

2024-08-14

For many people, automation is primarily associated with manufacturing plants producing goods on a large scale. In practice, however, it can be implemented in any company where repetitive processes dominate. This also applies to warehouses, which are increasingly moving away from the traditional manual work model in favor of automated technologies. We explain what warehouse process automation entails and the benefits associated with its implementation.

What is warehouse automation?

Warehouse automation is nothing more than the implementation of autonomously operating machines that partially or completely replace human labor in performing repetitive tasks. Depending on the individual needs of a company, it can cover some or all processes within the warehouse. Various devices and technologies are implemented to coordinate and streamline operations. The role of humans in automated warehouse environments is limited to supervising and monitoring the machines’ operation, as well as performing more complex tasks or those that must be carried out manually.

Automated warehouses are most often equipped with devices and machines such as autonomous mobile robots, warehouse lifts, automatic roller or belt conveyors, and automated shelving systems. Their management is usually handled by a WMS (Warehouse Management System), a specialized software used to track and coordinate operations performed on goods. The type of equipment and modern warehouse solutions implemented, as well as the tasks performed by the machines, depend on the individual needs of each company.

Which warehouse processes can be automated?

Practically all processes occurring in a warehouse can be automated, including:

  • Receiving and dispatching goods in the warehouse – as part of automating this process, automatic loading and unloading systems for vehicles are implemented, along with stations for checking the size and weight of pallets to verify whether the delivered goods meet specified requirements, as well as sorters that automatically classify and separate products according to their intended use.
  • Storage of goods – modern warehouse solutions in this area include systems that streamline the storage process, such as pallet and container stacker cranes, which automatically place or retrieve pallets, as well as pick up and store loads from shelves.
  • Transport – the automation of warehouse processes of this type involves the implementation of, for example, AGV carts, pallet and container conveyor lines, and autonomous mobile robots, which transport goods between different warehouse zones without human intervention.
  • Order preparation – automating order picking can include guidance signals for operators preparing goods or appropriately programmed industrial robots that completely replace humans in this process.
  • Logistics processes – warehouse automation systems are invaluable for planning and organizing work, monitoring inventory levels and quality, as well as tracking the flow of goods.

Why is it worth implementing automation in a warehouse?

There are many reasons to choose warehouse automation. The most important benefits of automating storage processes include:

  • Increased efficiency – an automated warehouse can operate around the clock, allowing all processes to be completed faster, which positively impacts customer satisfaction with the company’s services.
  • Elimination of human errors – properly programmed machines operate with high precision and repeatability without fatigue. This reduces the risk of mistakes or damage to goods due to employee oversight or exhaustion.
  • Cost optimization – implementing automated machines allows for minimizing material waste, reducing operational costs, and planning activities more accurately. Combined with minimized downtime, this not only lowers warehouse maintenance expenses but also increases profits.
  • Improved employee safety – assigning repetitive and physically demanding tasks to machines significantly reduces the number of workplace accidents.
