Applications of the work platform

2023-05-15

Even work at relatively low heights requires stable solutions. For this purpose, work platforms are used. Standards in this area are regulated by a range of regulations, but an experienced engineer can design a safe and practical model that meets the company’s requirements. Each solution requires expert knowledge and appropriate specialist support. Find out when a work platform is most effective.

Designing work platforms

A platform is a structure that enables work at heights. It ensures safety and stability for employees while they perform their tasks. A durable construction provides space for both materials and engineers, offering an adequate working surface. Large, sturdy models, often custom-made, are essential for operations on production lines. Many companies require dedicated solutions that genuinely improve work quality. A work platform is an indispensable element of every factory’s equipment.

Work platforms

Work platforms are equipped with a drive system, allowing employees to move while working. These devices enable work at much greater heights than a standard workbench or ladder. With a work platform, an employee, along with materials or equipment, can reach the desired height within seconds. This significantly simplifies task execution, as there is no need to climb up and down repeatedly. At the same time, it ensures safety through enclosed protective railings.

Two of the most common types of platforms can be distinguished: scissor and articulated. The former provides adequate space for personnel and rises above the base on scissor-like segments. The articulated mechanism is based on a special arm, allowing the platform to be raised so that an employee can reach hard-to-access areas. These platforms are particularly useful during the installation of systems, lighting, or other components in machinery or vehicles.

Work platforms – requirements

Platforms are devices with a wide range of capabilities. They provide stability and sufficient space. Depending on their design and type, they can be easily moved to wherever they are needed. However, work platforms must meet the appropriate requirements.

  • PN-EN ISO 14122-1:2005 – Machinery — Safety — Permanent Means of Access to Machinery — Part 1: Selection of Permanent Means of Access Between Two Levels – Specifies the requirements for choosing between a lift, an inclined plane, or stairs, as well as between ladder-type stairs and a ladder.
  • PN-EN ISO 14122-2:2005 – Machinery — Safety — Permanent Means of Access to Machinery — Part 2: Working Platforms and Walkways – Specifies the requirements regarding safety, location, dimensions, devices and equipment, flooring, and rated loads.
  • PN-EN ISO 14122-3:2005 – Machinery — Safety — Permanent Means of Access to Machinery — Part 3: Stairs, Stepladders, and Guardrails – Specifies safety requirements regarding materials and dimensions, and regulates the sizes of stairs, stepladders, and protective handrails.
  • Regulation of the Minister of Labor and Social Policy of September 26, 1997, on General Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2003, No. 169, item 1650, as amended) – This regulation addresses work at heights and the requirements that must be met by, among other things, platforms and other devices.
  • Regulation of the Council of Ministers of July 16, 2002, on the Types of Technical Devices Subject to Technical Supervision (Journal of Laws No. 120, item 1021, as amended) – This regulation specifies that mobile platforms fall under the supervision of the Office of Technical Inspection, and that individuals operating them must hold the appropriate qualifications.

According to regulations, devices must be stable and protected against uncontrolled movement, and provide sufficient space for workers, tools, and necessary materials. The platform floor must be level, and information regarding the maximum allowable load must be clearly displayed. Before use, a technical inspection must be carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations.
